Philippines enter Vegetables Go to School

On November 24th 2015, Vegetables Go to School (VGtS) project was launched in The Philippines. Several representatives from Xavier University-Sustainable Sanitation Centre (XU-SuSan) and Department of Education participated along with the officials from 16 schools which were initially selected to implement the project.

Briefing and discussions took place during the launching which clarified the roles and responsibilities of the officials who are involved in the project enabling them to have a better understanding of the project and its scope. Earlier from June till August, 2015 several other activities were conducted such as GIS mapping of all the 16 schools, discussion forums were conducted where the school staff including the School Principals, Members from the Education Department and Project Team discussed the three fold programme (School Gardens, WASH and School Feeding Programme) and develop approaches how to start with a sustainable implementation plan.

Discussion of the VgtS Project

Dr. Gina S. Itchon has been nominated as the country project manager. Dr Ichton, gave lectures about nutrition to young school children and graduates. This helped the graduates to prepare themselves to conduct training of teachers (ToT). 16 schools which have been selected so far – 08 schools with gardens (intervention schools) and 08 schools without garden (nonintervention schools).

Parallel sessions alongside have been conducted with the local partners introducing them to the VGtS project, its background and objectives aiming to incorporate training modules on nutrition and WASH in the school curricula for capacity building.
