More plots, more vegetables!

by Tej Prasad

Vegetables Go to School Nepal has established gardens at schools in Dolakha and Ramechap districts. More garden plots were prepared to accommodate more types of vegetables. Space is provided between the plots so that students can walk through the garden to tend their plants.

School gardens are a new concept in Nepal so the VGtS team supplied all the required material to the schools, including bamboo and plastic sheeting for the tunnel, labor, bamboo fencing, water tanks, pipes, etc. Students from class six and seven are working in the garden according to the curriculum in Nepal. Lessons on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) are also included along with the gardening activities.

We are encouraging students to grow vegetables at home as well, and have provided them with some vegetable seed. The students are growing cauliflower, broccoli, coriander, bean, radish, broad leaf mustard, spinach, sorghum, carrot, and pea.
