TOT in Batang!

A successful TOT training for vegetables in school activities was held on Tuesday-Thursday, 3-5 June 2014 in Batang, Central Java, Indonesia.

More than 50 participants attended the first day of training, including 10 principals, 20 elementary school teachers designated as companions for school garden activities, 10 home garden companions, and 10 coordinators of women’s groups who will implement home gardens, along with representatives from the Batang Agency for Food Security (Johan team), representatives from the Agency for Food Security Central Java Province (Rini team), and representatives from the Agency for Food Security, Ministry of Agriculture.

About 40 people joined in the second and third day of activities, as the principals were unable to attend for the full training session.

First Day :
1.    Overview and introduction: “Programs and School Garden Pilot Project Vegetables Go to School” by Ms. Sri Sulihanti, Head of the Center of Dietary Diversification, and Food Safety.
2.    “The Importance of Food Diversification, Consumption, Nutritious, Balanced Diets and Safety” and “Importance of Vegetable Consumption for Children’s Nutrition” by Ms. Rinna Syawal, Agency for Food Security, Ministry of Agriculture.
3.    “Design, Development and Implementation of School Gardens” and “Communication Strategy and Introduction to the Importance of School Gardens to the Students” by Mr. Ketut Kariada, Chief Executive, AVRDC School Gardens Program, Bali.

Second Day :
1.    Growing Vegetables in School Gardens (Theory)
(nursery, planting media, composting, maintenance, handling organisms / integrated pest management on crops / vegetable pesticide manufacturing techniques that are safe for the environment, etc.)
2.    Growing Vegetables in School Gardens (Practice)
(nursery, planting media, composting, maintenance, handling organisms / integrated pest management on crops / vegetable pesticide manufacturing techniques that are safe for the environment, etc.).

Third Day:
1.    Synergy between school gardens, environmental hygiene, health and sanitation and clean water from the Department of Health
2.    Data collection of Indonesian VGtS Team (Ratih and Dhany).

Ms. Gayatri Indah Cahyani, Head of Food Security Central Java Province, and Ms. Sri Sulihanti, Director, Consumption and Food Safety also attended the TOT.
